Philosophy

Children are born eager to learn. Our role is to provide an environment which feeds their hunger and where children are encouraged to explore and be curious; where they feel safe and loved; where they can learn about their emotions and gain social skills.

Every class at River School has at least one teacher and one co-teacher. Although there is an established curriculum for each age level; River School teachers are given the freedom and flexibility to teach in a way that is comfortable for them and for the children. Personalities differ and so does the atmosphere and routine of each class. The children are provided time to share their ideas, exchange thoughts and learn to listen to their classmates.

River School believes that children learn from everyone, be it an adult or another child and that they benefit from interaction with children of all ages. Our primary goal is to support each child’s sense of wonder, joy and desire to explore the world and people around them. As children successfully engage in collaborative play and work with their peers and teachers they become eager learners and gain self–confidence and self-esteem. We encourage the children to express themselves in a myriad of ways, through a curriculum that is developed by both the teachers and the children and often by the interplay between them as ideas emerge.
